This Could Be Texas
Gareth Kemp
30 July – 23 Aug 26
This Could Be Texas showcases a recent body of work made by Liverpool-based artist Gareth Kemp. The title comes from a song by the band English Teacher. The exhibition includes paintings, sculpture and neon which have been made in the years following an Arts Council England funded research trip to Texas in 2018. The work includes hard-edged paintings of sculptures that reference Donald Judd’s 15 Untitled works in Concrete (1980-84), images of Nodding Donkeys with added text based on a list of new year resolutions made by Woody Guthrie in 1943 and images of imagined monuments standing in the desert. There are also text-based and motif-based pieces that reference the Marfa Lights, an unexplained natural phenomena seen near Marfa. Kemp presents the work in a playful way with some paintings displayed free-standing on the floor or projecting from the gallery wall, blurring the lines between painting and sculpture. The exhibition includes some brand new work made specifically for the show.
