A Pattern Language

Sam van Strien

13 February to 8 March 2020

Sam van Strien’s practice is driven by the question of how – and where – we experience architecture. This series of works are made from designs found on azulejo tiles, a type of tile found traditionally in the domestic and public spaces of Portuguese and Spanish buildings. Made through a process of producing rubbings and laser engravings from tiles found on the exteriors of homes, these works act as a document, record and visual remnant of a language of interlocking curvilinear, geometric and floral motifs. This one-to-one process is a way to lift directly from the azulejo, by touching and making impressions of these symbols that hold cultural memory and identity.
