Liz Elton
5 December 2019 to 5 January 2020
Liz Elton’s practice starts in landscape painting, capturing fragility and impermanence, wondering how we continue. These qualities are embodied in the cornstarch that she uses as a ground; it is light, translucent and floats like parachute silk as the air moves around it. She looks for narratives to describe a shifting landscape and supplements traditional materials with dyes from food waste, seeds, found wood and willow. Her cornstarch ground embraces the contradiction between a material made from crops and its use as food waste recycling bags. Her large paintings anticipate decay, evoking consideration of time, land, digestion, waste and recovery.
