The word ‘emotion’ derives from the Latin ‘emovere’ which means to stir or move the sentiments. ‘emovere’ combines two bodies of work entitled ‘a.i.feel’ and ‘Masking’. Both series have been created using deep learning models which generate images from text prompts. The ‘a.i feel’ paintings aim to question our evolving relationship with artificial intelligence. The portraits are deliberately numbered so as not to humanise them, but do the painterly texture and gestural marks convey more of a sense of human emotion? The ‘Masking’ series of miniatures aim to explore feelings of isolation and anxiety and examine the way in which we can often conceal our true emotions.
