In from the Cold
26 November to 19 December 2021
In from the Cold is a solo Exhibition at The Stone Space by Lewis Davidson, centred upon his longstanding series Tags (2015-21).
Graffiti Tags are pseudonyms, used by Graffiti Artists to mark where they have been and define personal territory in public space. In the series Tags, Davidson cuts Graffiti directly from the surfaces it has been sprayed onto, such as doors, concrete slabs and wooden fencing.
Through the process of cutting out the Tags, Davidson turns the fixed and 2D into moveable objects, transforming markers of place and identity into autonomous forms. Nothing is changed in the internal structure of the Tag itself, other than the context around it. Yet through this process, Lewis highlights the influence of context and its effect upon how we perceive objects, their associations and position of value in culture.
Dedicated in loving memory to Clifford Johnson.
Please note: The gallery will be open to visitors during this exhibition with Covid safety measures in place. We would ask that visitors wear masks and maintain social distancing during their visit.
