Collective
19 – 29 August 2021
An exhibition of artworks by The Stone Space volunteers.
The Stone Space opened as an independent and volunteer-run not-for-profit gallery in October 2011. It temporarily closed its doors in April 2020 due to the pandemic and then resumed hosting exhibitions that could be viewed from outside the gallery, through the window on Church Lane, in August 2020, before fully reopening to visitors at the beginning of May 2021.
Leytonstone, and the surrounding area, had and continues to have, a large population of artists, who often work unseen behind closed doors. The Stone Space has become an important focal point for these artists and the centre of a thriving community that supports and encourages creatives locally and globally.
The gallery is staffed solely by volunteers and ‘Collective’ presents a selection of their artworks, all made in recent years and thus influenced to some degree by the challenges posed by Covid. Whilst the volunteers are united in their ongoing support of The Stone Space, their work demonstrates the diverse approaches that they take as individual artists, in terms of the themes they explore and the media they use.
