‘Til Morning Wakes

Til Morning Wakes takes its title from a lullaby and is suggestive of time spent as a new mother between night and dawn, half awake/half asleep. It was in this suspended state that most of the thinking was done in preparation for the show. The work itself was made in the kitchen or living room of the artist’s home in South London.

For this exhibition at The Stone Space, Greig has made two series of watercolour paintings, digital  and photocopied collages and collection of small objects. Pools of colour bleeding into each other take form in a floating like state on the paper, their organic shapes suggestive of bodily matter, a tombstone or tablet. Objects have been formed with plaster or soap soaked with food colouring using discarded take-away carton and lids, yoghurt and dessert pots. The curation of the work intends for the gallery and domestic space to subtly blend into each other, with furniture placed for the viewer to sit on and the artist’s notes and writing available to read.

Athene Greig is a London based artist. She studied at the Glasgow School of Art and more recently took part on the Turps Studio Programme from 2015-17. Her practice is rooted in painting and encompasses sculpture, film and sound.
